The High Potential Individual (HPI) visa is designed for graduates from top universities around the world who want to live and work in the UK. Launched by the UK government in May 2022, the HPI visa offers flexibility for talented individuals who don’t need a job offer before applying. This article explains the HPI visa benefits, eligibility requirements, and the application process.
Benefits of the HPI Visa
The HPI visa provides several benefits for holders, including:
- No job offer required: You can work for any employer in the UK, including those without a sponsor license.
- Flexibility: You can be self-employed, volunteer, or switch jobs freely.
- Dependant visa: You can bring your spouse and children with you to the UK.
- Duration: The visa lasts for 2 years or 3 years if you hold a PhD or other doctoral qualification.
Can the HPI Visa be Extended?
Unfortunately, the HPI visa cannot be extended beyond the initial period. However, you can switch to another type of visa (e.g., a Skilled Worker visa) before your HPI visa expires.
Can I Switch to the HPI Visa?
Yes, if you’re already in the UK on a valid visa, it may be possible to switch to an HPI visa without leaving the country. However, you cannot switch to an HPI visa if you hold certain types of visas, such as a visit visa, short-term student visa, or seasonal worker visa.
HPI Visa Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the HPI visa, you must meet the following requirements:
1. Graduate from a Top-Ranked University
- You must have graduated from a top-ranked university outside the UK within the past 5 years. The UK Home Office publishes a list of eligible universities, which is updated annually. Universities from countries like the USA, Canada, Australia, China, and many others are included.
2. Have a Suitable Qualification
- Your qualification must be equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree, postgraduate degree, or PhD. The Home Office requires applicants to have their qualifications assessed by Ecctis (the UK government’s official body for educational qualification assessments).
3. Meet the English Language Requirement
- You can meet the English requirement by:
- Having a degree that was taught in English.
- Passing a Secure English Language Test (SELT) to at least B1 level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
- Being from an English-speaking country such as the USA, Canada, Australia, or the UK.
4. Have Sufficient Funds
- You must have at least £1,270 in savings to support yourself when you arrive in the UK. If you’ve been in the UK for over 12 months, you do not need to meet this requirement.
How to Apply for the HPI Visa
The HPI visa application involves several steps:
Step 1: Get Your Qualification Verified
- Apply to Ecctis to have your degree or qualification assessed. The fee for this is £210 (or £252 if you are already in the UK). You’ll need to provide:
- Your final degree certificate.
- Official transcripts.
- Certified translations of documents (if not in English).
- Passport or photo ID.
Step 2: Complete the Online HPI Visa Application
- After receiving confirmation from Ecctis, complete the online application form. The application fee is £715, and you must also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £1,248 for a 2-year visa or £1,872 for a 3-year visa.
Step 3: Prove Your Identity
- You can prove your identity either by:
- Attending an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC), or
- Using the UK Immigration: ID Check app (available in some countries).
Step 4: Submit Your Documents
- Upload your supporting documents through the online application. The Home Office will provide a list of documents you need to submit.
Processing Time
- If you apply outside the UK, processing usually takes about 3 weeks after you’ve submitted your documents and proven your identity.
- If you apply inside the UK, processing can take up to 8 weeks. If the Home Office asks for more information, the process may take longer.
Bringing Your Family to the UK
If you want to bring your spouse or children with you, they will each need to apply for their visa. They can use your reference number to link their applications to yours. If their visa is granted, it will generally expire on the same date as your HPI visa.
The High Potential Individual (HPI) visa is an excellent option for highly skilled graduates from top international universities who want to work and live in the UK. It offers flexibility, the opportunity to bring family members, and the freedom to change jobs. If you’re interested in applying, ensure that you meet all the eligibility criteria and carefully follow the application process.
