Once you’ve submitted your Form N-400 for U.S. citizenship, the waiting begins. The time it takes to process your application can vary depending on your location, with larger cities often experiencing longer wait times. Processing times can range from a few months to over two years and are influenced by the USCIS field office assigned to your case based on your home address.
The good news is that you can track your application’s status in multiple ways, and keep up to date on your progress. Whether you need to update your mailing address or check your estimated wait time, here are the four main ways to check your U.S. citizenship application status: online, by mail, by phone, and in person.
1. Check Your U.S. Citizenship Application Status Online
Checking your application status online is the quickest and easiest way to get updates about your case. There are two main online methods:
USCIS Case Status Online Tracker
- Find the Receipt Number for your citizenship application (you will find it in the letter you received from USCIS when they accepted your Form N-400).
- Go to the USCIS Case Status Online tracker page.
- Enter your Receipt Number and click Check Status.
- The tracker will provide basic status updates for your application. For more detailed information, use MyUSCIS.
MyUSCIS Account
If you applied for citizenship online, you would have created an account on MyUSCIS to complete your application. If you applied by mail, you can still create an account on MyUSCIS to track your status.
- Log in to MyUSCIS.
- Select your U.S. citizenship application from the menu.
- Access the latest information about your application, including estimated processing times and notices sent to you.
MyUSCIS also allows you to update your address and access resources related to your citizenship test.
Understanding Your Receipt Number
Every USCIS form you submit receives a unique Receipt Number. This number is a combination of 3 letters and 10 digits (e.g., ABC1234567891). You’ll find this number in your notification letter from USCIS.
Important: When entering your Receipt Number online, omit hyphens and spaces but include any other special characters (e.g., asterisks) as shown in the notification.
2. Check Your U.S. Citizenship Application Status by Mail
USCIS sends all official notices by mail to the address you provided on your Form N-400 or in your MyUSCIS account. It’s important to:
- Keep your mailing address up to date. You can update your address through MyUSCIS at any time.
- Check your mailbox regularly for updates.
If you need to update your mailing address, refer to the USCIS guidelines or make the changes in your MyUSCIS account.
3. Check Your U.S. Citizenship Application Status by Phone
If you prefer to check your application status by phone, be prepared for long wait times as the phone lines can be very busy. Before calling, USCIS recommends using the online tools in MyUSCIS for faster results. However, if you still need to speak with someone, you can call the USCIS Contact Center.
- Phone Number: 1-800-375-5283
- TTY Number (for those who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech impairment): 1-800-767-1833
Make sure you have the following information ready when you call:
- Your USCIS Receipt Number
- Your A-Number (Alien Registration Number), if applicable
- Your full name and birth date
4. Check Your U.S. citizenship Application Status in Person
USCIS no longer offers InfoPass appointments for checking your citizenship application status in person. However, if you need a service that cannot be provided by phone or online, USCIS will schedule an in-person appointment for you.
Some examples of when you may need an in-person appointment include:
- When you need proof of your immigration status for work or travel.
- If your temporary stay in the U.S. is expiring and you need documentation for “satisfactory departure.”
- When you need emergency travel documents.
To request an in-person appointment, call the USCIS Contact Center at 1-800-375-5283 or TTY 1-800-767-1833 if you have a hearing or speech impairment.
What should I do if my U.S. citizenship status is “Pending”
If your application status is “Pending,” here are steps you can take to address the situation:
Understand the U.S. Citizenship Pending Status
A “Pending” status typically indicates that the lender or organization requires additional time to review your application. This can happen for various reasons, including:
- Missing Information: Some required documents or details may not have been submitted.
- Verification Processes: The application might be undergoing verification checks, such as background checks or credit evaluations.
- High Volume of Applications: The organization may be experiencing a backlog due to a high number of applications.
Actions to Take
- Be Patient: Many applications are resolved within a few days, but some may take longer. It’s essential to allow sufficient time for processing.
- Check for Communication: Ensure you haven’t missed any notifications from the lender or organization. Decisions are often communicated via email or postal mail, so check your inbox and spam folder regularly.
- Log into Your Account: If applicable, log into your online account with the lender or organization to check for updates on your application status. Some institutions provide real-time updates through their portals.
- Contact Customer Service: If your application remains pending for an extended period (usually more than a week), consider reaching out to customer service. You can inquire about the status and whether any action is needed on your part. Some issuers have dedicated lines for application inquiries.
- Review Your Application: Double-check that all information provided is accurate and complete. If there were discrepancies, this could lead to delays in processing.
- Prepare for Follow-Up: If you need to provide additional documentation or clarification, be ready to do so promptly once contacted by the issuer.
By using any of these methods, you can stay informed about the progress of your U.S. citizenship application status. Whether you check online, by phone, or by mail, it’s important to stay proactive and monitor your case as it moves through the process.
