K-1 Visa Interview Questions: What to Expect and How to Prepare.

K-1 visa interview: this can be the most nerve-racking section of a fiancé visa. You’re going to be nervous, but keep in mind the interview is all about making sure that you are married to your U.S. citizen fiancé. This is an easy step to do if you are prepared for it.

What Takes Place in a K-1 Visa Interview?

In an interview, the consular officer will only care about how you are related to your partner. The US citizen sponsor usually isn’t allowed, but do visit your embassy website for their policy since some might not. If you’re taking kids, and they have K-2 visas, they must go to the appointment, too.

The consular officer will quiz you on your personal history, fiancé and relationship. What follows is a breakdown of some of the questions you might get.

Sample K-1 Visa Interview Questions

You will be asked different kinds of questions, but here are a few you’ll get asked in your interview.

Personal Information Questions

These inquiries let the police officer get to know you and your history:

  • What’s your nationality?
  • What do you do as a worker?
  • Have you had a K-1 fiancé(e) visa? If so, why?
  • Have you been arrested or convicted?
  • Have you been married before?
  • What happens after your visa is approved?
  • Did you visit the US before?

These are to verify that you have no past immigration convictions or crimes. If you’re worried about your record, write up an explanation and gather any documentation.

Questions About Your Fiancé

Expect to be asked questions about your fiancé, who they are, and the story of their life:

  • How old is your fiancé?
  • Where does your fiancé live?
  • Where are your fiancé’s former spouses?
  • Are you living with anyone or is it just you?
  • Have they been married before? Do you like them or don’t?
  • What does your husband do for a living?

These are questions designed to prove you know your fiancé and his/her family. You’ll want the officer to make sure your fiancé is not already married and that you are both engaged in the 90 days following your arrival in the US.

Questions About Your Relationship

You will also be asked how you met and what your relationship is: How did you meet the officer?

  • When did you meet your fiancé?
  • What are you into doing together?
  • Are your fiancé’s parents your friends?
  • Do you ever go to see your fiancé in the U.S.?
  • What was the proposal like?
  • Have you planned your wedding?  Do you have any proof?
  • Who will attend the wedding?

These are to ensure that you two are actually in love and want to get married. Be ready to be candid and reveal personal information about your relationship that indicates it is authentic.

Tips for a Successful Interview

  • Be Honest and Open: Reply to every question as accurately as possible. If you are a novice in something, don’t guess.
  • Calm Down and Confidence: Remember, the officer just wants to make sure that you are together. Confidence that your relationship exists and don’t get too upset in the interview.
  • Polite and Respectful: Do not get offended, treat the officer like a person, and do not panic even if you are nervous. Friendliness makes for a good first impression.
  • Bring Your Papers: Be prepared with any paperwork that validates your answers (photographs, itinerary, proof of wedding plans). That will give the relationship authenticity.
  • If You Will Be Required To Change Your Date: In case you are unable to come for your interview call the embassy immediately to change your date.
