Indian students are vital to the UK’s economy and cultural diversity. To support these students, the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has made changes to the Tier 4 Student Visa process, offering more flexibility and support. This new system is being introduced in partnership with VFS Global, a visa services provider.
In the year ending March 2020, almost 50,000 Tier 4 Student Visas were granted to Indian nationals, marking a 136% increase compared to the previous year. These changes make it easier for Indian students to come to the UK to study.
1. New Flexibility in the Visa Process
UKVI is making the student visa process more flexible for students from India. The key changes include:
- More Options for Applying: Students can now apply for their Tier 4 Visa when they are ready to travel to the UK, not necessarily when their course starts. This allows students to begin their studies online and apply for a visa when needed.
- Graduate Route: From summer 2021, international students who complete an undergraduate or Master’s degree in the UK can stay for up to two years to work and gain experience. PhD students can stay for up to three years. This includes students who started their course online from abroad, as long as they complete their final semester in the UK.
David Ratcliffe, the UKVI Regional Director for South and Southeast Asia, stated:
“The new Graduate Route is a fantastic opportunity for students to begin their careers in the UK after completing their studies.”
2. Keeping Students Safe During the Pandemic
As part of efforts to protect students during the COVID-19 pandemic, VFS Global has implemented safety measures across all its visa application centres. These measures include:
- Online appointment bookings
- Temperature checks at entry points
- Strict social distancing
- Regular disinfection of surfaces
- Sanitizing stations and handwashing facilities
UKVI centers began to reopen in early July, with many locations now open in cities like Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, New Delhi, and Mumbai. However, the opening times may be affected by local lockdowns.
3. Apply for Your Visa from Home
The On-Demand Mobile Visa Service allows students to apply for their Tier 4 Student Visa and complete biometrics from the comfort of their own homes. Once your visa is approved, your passport will be sent to you by courier.
Vinay Malhotra, Regional Group COO for UKVI, reassured students:
“We are committed to providing a safe and seamless visa application process, whether through our centers or the doorstep service.”
4. Eligibility for the Tier 4 Student Visa
To apply for a Tier 4 Student Visa, you must meet the following criteria:
- Have an unconditional offer for a course from a licensed Tier 4 sponsor.
- Prove you have enough money to cover your tuition fees and living expenses.
- Demonstrate your ability to speak, read, and write English.
If you are bringing family members with you (e.g., spouse or children), you must show you can financially support them as well. Additionally, you will need to pay the healthcare surcharge for yourself and any dependents.
